WEST WILDWOOD – A handful of residents attended the Borough Commission meeting April 2 – the divergence from the usual date and time out of respect to family and religious priorities held by many in the borough.
“I apologize for any inconvenience,” Mayor Christopher Fox said when the meeting adjourned. Fox thanked those who came and wished everyone a happy Easter.
The soup and half-sandwich luncheon was a success, according to Maureen Smith and other members of the board. “It could have been a total flop,” Smith said. “But people kept coming.”
Apparently, several people returned later to purchase items left over and took them home for dinner. “It was a good fundraiser,” Smith said, and Fox concurred. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to West Wildwood Fire Department.
The spaghetti dinner, tentatively rescheduled for May, may be replaced with a cookout during the summer months, details are pending. Commissioners authorized a “town-wide yard sale” June 6 (rain date of June 7) as well.
Support Gas Pipeline
West Wildwood pledged its support and participation in the New Jersey Law Enforcement Support Office (LESO) program and to the proposed pipeline by South Jersey Gas to B.L. England Generating Station, Beesley’s Point; although these two ongoing matters have their origins in other places and communities, West Wildwood set its sight on what will benefit the borough.
Reasons for supporting the gas pipeline summarize themselves in the resolution: “to enhance reliability for electric and gas customers of Cape May and Atlantic counties.” The board passed a resolution for support of the steps being taken by state officials to protect/support federal military bases in New Jersey.
Ordinances
Two ordinances also came before the board: the repeal of five ordinances in total and their reissuing under “the mercantile license ordinance,” and one establishing procedures and fees “for obtaining certifications, certified copies or corrections of vital records.” A fee of $10 per record shall be assessed and then collected by the clerk. All payments should be made out to the Borough of West Wildwood.
The mercantile license ordinance affects “any person conducting a business or commercial activity within the Borough of West Wildwood, either directly or indirectly, must first obtain a mercantile license, except in those cases where a different license is required by any provision of this ordinance…”
Repaving Funded
Other news came in the commissioners’ reports in the passing of a bond for road improvements in the borough. “This is great news!” Fox announced.
A repaving of various streets including the 500 block of Magnolia Avenue and a reconstruction of Popular Avenue make up most of the bond. Apprehensions that the bond would not pass vanished in light of the report. Work on Neptune Avenue and paving work at the firehouse also met satisfactory reports from the commissioners.
“Our guys have done a lot of work,” said Maxwell. Between the fundraisers, new ordinances, and the everyday running of a borough, West Wildwood is optimistic for the summer and the vitality of a strong and close community.
