SEA ISLE CITY – “As police officers, we issue summonses and try to connect with the community through our outreach. This year we had four officers on the beach for 16 hours each day to address what were rising complaints about drinking on the beach,” said Sea Isle City Chief of Police Thomas D’Intino as he briefed City Council Sept. 26 on the summer of 2017 relating to safety and arrests.
“We had a number of plainclothes officers and recruits from the academy as well as seasonally-hired officers who really performed well and made a difference in the safety of our town this summer. We received many compliments about how everything worked this year,” said D’Intino.
Council Chair Mary Tighe asked D’Intino, “Is it OK to also go to the lifeguards to report an issue?” The answer was “Yes, all lifeguard stands have radios and officers will respond immediately. We can only help in a situation if we see it ourselves or if it is reported. If you see something, please say something,” replied D’Intino.
Tighe posed an additional question, “Are there still the same ‘problem areas’ like from 40th Street to the bay where there seem to always be an incident?”
D’Intino replied by describing the work of “quality-of-life squads” which, he said, were formerly known as “noise officers.”
“They respond as needed to problem areas where rowdiness has been reported or drinking, or open-container alcohol has gotten out of hand. We can expand as needed.
“There are always the same landlords as repeat offenders who have these issues each year, but every year there are random, additional areas where we need to have a presence,” he continued.
“This was a pretty calm summer as recorded from Memorial Day to Labor Day,” continued D’Intino.
“The number of parking summons we issued was up. We had 396 criminal arrests with 196 of these quality-of-life complaints.
“We arrested 62 juveniles primarily for drinking. Ordinance violations were down year over year,” the chief concluded.
