SEA ISLE CITY – Business Administrator George Savastano spoke about this year’s beach tag sales at the Aug. 29 City Council meeting. “This year was a bit down from last year which was a banner year for beach tag sales,” he said.
“Two years ago, 2015, also was a very strong year for beach tag sales. We still are in line with what we’ve budgeted for this year, so the 2017 figures anticipate that forecast.
“With just the Labor Day weekend to go, we’re not expecting to surpass 2016 though. Our feeling is that this summer had some more days with rain which affected beach tag sales,” he said.
Chief Financial Officer and Tax Collector Paula Doll, provided more information about the recent beach tag sales.
“August figures are not yet available, and the below listing is through July for total collections in dollars and then numbers of beach tags sold per each category:
The order is 2015, 2016, 2017:
Collections: $1,274,195, $1,286,200, $1,261,660
Seasonal: 49,226, 50,105, 49,604
Weekly: 11,365, 11,368, 10,470
Daily: 25,678, 24,491, 22,931
Veteran: 1,193, 1,405, 1,465
Doll echoed Savastano’s belief that “The decrease is predominantly due to more rainy days especially on the weekends and lower than average temperatures.” Overall, collections were still only down year-over-year about 9 percent, and the remaining categories registered percentage decreases of about less than 5 percent.
The city charged $5 for a daily beach tag pass; $10 for a weekly pass Saturday to Saturday and a seasonal pass is $20 purchased by May 15, or after May 15 the cost is $25.
Under state law, each municipality has the discretion to offer no-cost passes to military service members and veterans.
