Should Cape May Buy AME Church?

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – At its regular meeting Nov. 6, Cape May City Council authorized an environmental assessment of the Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church property on Franklin Street.
The church, one of the oldest African American churches in the county, was damaged by fire in June 2018. Following the fire, the city arranged for a feasibility study of the building, which concluded that the structure could be rehabilitated.
Church officials have contemplated selling the property. The city has worked to help define alternatives that would maintain the structure.
The authorization for the environmental study was a last-minute addition to the council agenda. Minutes of a closed council session Sept. 3 indicate that officials were discussing the possible purchase of the historic church. Concern over potential environmental issues led to the present assessment authorization.
