Sheriff Officer Charged By Dog While Serving Warrant in Burleigh

By Press Release

BURLEIGH – Cape May County Sheriff warrant officers were serving a warrant, for non support at a residence in the Burleigh section of Middle Township Feb. 28.
Sheriff Officer Osmundsen, a six year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, observed the male that they were looking for, in the rear of the property and approached him, announcing their presence. Officer Osmundsen called out to the male, at which time the male’s pit bull charged at the officer. Officer Osmundsen then discharged his weapon for his own protection, one time. The pit bull was not struck, at which point it retreated into the residence.
A subsequent investigation by the Major Crimes Unit of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Detectives from the Middle Township Police Department and the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office was conducted. Eugene Harris, 45, was arrested at the scene and charged with contempt of court for failure to pay child support, signed by Judge John Rauh. Harris was subsequently transported to the Cape May County Correctional Center.
Prosecutor Taylor, Chief Leusner and Sheriff Schaffer recognize all the agencies involved in this arrest and investigation.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
