ERMA – Councilman Roland Roy stated that the Lower Township Municipal Utilities Authority will be extending sewer lines through Erma.
According to a release, in parts of Erma, many homeowners are dependent on septic tanks. The sewer expansion area is on the Middle Township border, and runs south down Route 9, and then west on Breakwater Road toward Fishing Creek, and a section south along Tabernacle Road.
Sewer service can reduce the health threats of groundwater contamination, particularly on small lots served by both septic systems and private wells. If the lot is small enough and the well shallow enough people can end up drinking their own sewage. Septic systems can add unhealthy amounts of bacteria, nitrates, and other pollutants to the groundwater.
