COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee heard a recommendation during public comment April 16 urging it to appoint a group to study the municipality’s form of government and propose potential changes. The argument was that a township as vast in land area as Middle and populated by over 18,000 citizens needs a more widely-representative governing body capable of speaking for the many diverse interests in the community.
Almost as soon as the comments were voiced, members of the committee took positions on the issue. Deputy Mayor Jeffrey DeVico came out against the idea almost immediately, saying that the governing body as presently formulated was fully capable of representing the entire township. DeVico was supported in that view by Mayor Michael Clark.
Committee member Timothy Donohue said he would welcome a study group. Donohue did not favor addressing the issue first with a ballot initiative. “We need a representative group to study the issue first, and then engage in education of the public,” he said. He added that such a process would allow the public to better understand what was involved in an eventual ballot question.
