Route 52 Causeway Southbound Lane to Close Until May ’09

By Herald Staff

OCEAN CITY — The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced that the right southbound lane of the Route 52 Causeway in Ocean City and Somers Point will be closed from Sept. 16 through May 2009.
Route 52 northbound will maintain two travel lanes, while southbound traffic will be limited to one lane. Two southbound lanes will be available during designated holidays.
The closure will enable NJDOT to continue its replacement of the Route 52 Causeway. NJDOT is currently replacing 1.2 miles of the interior portion of the 73-year-old Route 52 causeway from Elbow Island to Garrett’s Island. In April 2008, NJDOT opened the new northbound bridge. The old causeway is currently being demolished in order to provide space for the new southbound roadway, which will be completed by fall 2009.
NJDOT has installed variable message signs on the Garden State Parkway, Route 52 and Route 559 to inform motorists of the lane closure and other traffic impacts. Real-time travel and construction information is available online at www.nj 511.info.
