CAPE MAY — The city’s income from room tax receipts collected from hotels/motels and bed and breakfast inns this past summer was up 6.5 percent from last year.
At an Oct. 19 City Council meeting, City Manager Bruce MacLeod reported receipts for August totaled $276,026, up from $273,944 in 2009.
“What’s important to me is the last four months in a year-over-year comparison were better than 2009,” he said.
The fourth months ending in August collectively showed an improvement of $43,380 over 2009 or about 6.5 percent, said MacLeod.
Summer parking meter revenue figures through September are estimated at $942,639, up $40,632 from 2009, which totaled $902,007, an increase of 4.5 percent, he said.
Credit cards receipts for September are not yet available but the city has estimated $30,000 in parking meter revenue which was included in the summer 2010 figures, said MacLeod.
Beach tag revenue for the summer through September totaled $1,883,945, up from $1,842,292 in 2009, an increase of $41,653 or about 2.3 percent.
MacLeod said the national recession supposedly began in 2008 and according to some economists, is over. If that is the case, 2009 would have been the bottom of the recession, he said.
“Our numbers seem to reflect a better summer this year than in 2009,” said MacLeod.
