Road Projects Bump to Go, Road Will Close Five Days

By Al Campbell

CREST HAVEN – Good news is in the offing for motorists who cross the railroad tracks at Indian Trail Road in Burleigh. Sometime in early October the bump at the tracks will be gone. Bad news for those same travelers, the road will close for five days as work is done on the $600,000 project, according to County Engineer Dale Foster.
The project was among a series of 34 road improvements he described that total $10.08 million to be included in an upcoming bond ordinance. The majority of projects are funded by state or federal grants. Foster told the board his department is overseeing about 50 projects countywide.
Foster reported to freeholders Aug. 12 he had been in conversations with the state Department of Transportation, Bureau of Railroad Engineering and Cape May Seashore Line about the crossing. Federal and state funds have been received for the job that will include replacement of the segment that many motorists swerve to avoid so their vehicle will not be jarred by the bump. The project will include Indian Trail from Route 9 to Shunpike Road.
One problem Foster noted of Indian Trail’s closure while the work is accomplished is that of trash-laden trucks accessing and leaving the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority’s transfer station on Shunpike Road.
The nearest road to the transfer facility is Oyster Road, which has a four-ton weight limit, with signs posted.
Trash trucks are prohibited from utilizing Shunpike Road north of the site. That was a concession to residents along the road when the transfer facility was located between Oyster Road and Indian Trail Road. It also has weight limits posted.
Another project, set to begin after the season ends, is repair of the Townsend’s Inlet section of Ocean Drive. That section was ravaged by the sea and is often closed as a result of storms. Its cost alone is projected at over $11 million, Foster said. Since that was caused by Superstorm Sandy, it is eligible for grant funding.
Pavement markings, done with an epoxy paint that last longer than ordinary paint, on various roads will cost about $113,000. Various road repairs will cost $585,000. Drainage improvements, various, $1.16 million.
Other projects over $200,000 include with county road number:
CR 619, Ocean Drive revetment repairs, Rush Chattin Bridge to Corson’s Inlet Bridge revetment repairs, Sandy restoration, $635,000 and same area, extension, $200,000.
