STONE HARBOR – It is customary to think of the summer season as bounded by Memorial Day at one end and Labor Day at the other. Yet there are other rhythms to the seasons on the islands, other symbols of transition in many ways more telling than a transient holiday.
Stone Harbor Public Works Director Grant Russ gave his monthly report to the governing body Oct. 2 noting that the concession stands were all off the beaches and the parking meters and kiosks had all been turned off.
As second homeowners prepare to winterize their residences, as parking becomes free and increasingly available, as empty beaches allow solitary contemplation of the sea, one feels the more natural rhythm of seasonal change. Eight months away is a new summer season.
