COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Conference of Mayors unanimously passed a resolution that supported legislation that would create a pilot program making health care more attainable for veterans.
U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-2) introduced legislation (H.R 4759) that would issue each eligible veteran who elects to receive hospital care and medical services at a facility that is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, an identification card that would enable them to receive treatment at a local medical facility.
Lower Township Mayor Michael Beck, who is president of the county Conference of Mayors, said that in some cases local veterans have been made to wait months for medical appointments and travel for long hours out of state for care.
“It just isn’t right,” said Beck of the issues regarding the lack of local treatment facilities.
“Cape May County is home to a number of veterans and they shouldn’t be made to sit on a bus for hours just to get to and from a medical facility,” Beck added. “This bill can provide veterans with local health care resources and professionals.”
