Resolution on Upper Township Traffic Light Project

TRENTON – Senator Jeff Van Drew announced April 17 that a number of issues surrounding the installation of a traffic light at a dangerous intersection in Upper Township have been resolved, clearing the way for the long-stalled project to begin this calendar year.
Senator Van Drew discussed the matter yesterday with officials from the state Department of Transportation and representatives from Cape May County and Upper Township. He said officials have resolved several outstanding issues regarding the proposed project at Route 50 and Hope Corson Road. They include the configuration of traffic flow in the intersection as well as environmental and financial issues.
“I want to thank Commissioner Simpson as well as our local officials for a very productive meeting,” said Senator Van Drew (D-Cape May/Cumberland/Atlantic). “A number of issues regarding the proposed project have been resolved and the Department of Transportation has pledged that the traffic light project will move forward this year. This is good news for motorists who travel this area and for our residents, many of whom have expressed concern about the number of auto accidents that occur at the intersection.”
Senator Van Drew said the Department of Transportation approved the traffic light plan both the county and township were seeking to include a turn lane both northbound and southbound on Route 50.
“The installation of a traffic light in this area is necessary and will be configured in the safest manner possible, with the inclusion of a turn lane so that motorists are provided a measure of predictability when crossing,” added Van Drew. “This will ensure better traffic flow in the intersection and help to reduce auto accidents on this highly traveled roadway.”
Van Drew said the final plan for the project will be completed in the next 10 weeks with construction beginning within the calendar year.
