WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) have introduced a bipartisan resolution, S.Res 529, calling for the immediate, unconditional release of Iranian-Americans Siamak Namazi and his father Baquer Namazi from Iranian custody. Siamak Namazi has been held under arrest since Oct. of 2015 and his father, Baquer has been held since February of 2016. Both Siamak and Baquer, dual Iranian-American citizens, are being held in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison.
“Iran should immediately and unconditionally release Siamak and Baquer Namazi, two American citizens who have been held for months without explanation” Booker said. “The disregard for human rights by Iranian security services is plainly unacceptable, and we must work tirelessly towards a diplomatic solution that ensures the Namazis’ release.”
“The Namazi family is going through a terrible hardship needlessly inflicted by Iranian authorities,” Hatch said. “We will not stand by while the rights of American citizens are violated, and the Namazis should not be held without charges. I stand with my friend Senator Cory Booker: The U.S. will not abide Iran’s lawless and brazen behavior, and we will do everything we can to resolve this through diplomatic channels. The Namazis deserve their freedom.”
Siamak Namazi is a former Rutgers University student and most recently worked for a company based in Dubai. Baquer Namazi is a former UNICEF representative and a leader in humanitarian causes focused on poverty eradication.
