Resident: Limit Beach-tag Transfer

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – During public comment at Cape May City Council’s Aug. 6 meeting, resident Jules Rauch urged the governing body to curb the bulk transfer of beach tags to “strings of guests” at local hotels and motels.
“The beach tags are non-transferable,” Rauch said, “yet many hotels in the area buy seasonal tags and hand them out to successive guests in a single room.”
Rauch added that he felt this practice cost the city $200,000 to $300,000 in yearly revenue.
Beach tags are the main source of revenue for the city’s Beach Utility, which is responsible for paying lifeguards and taggers, and providing several beach services and maintenance activities.
