AVALON – As Avalon’s beach replenishment comes to an end, one beachgoer brought a very different issue to the Borough Council’s attention – the need for access to food during the main beach-going hours.

The council was reminded that the town’s boardwalk no longer has vendors supplying a variety of food for beachgoers.

“We are basically limited to ice cream and water,” a resident said.

She indicated that food trucks might be a solution to the need for greater variety.

In the past, Avalon has restricted the movement of food trucks near the beach access points as a matter of public safety. The suggestion made to council was to consider renting out permanent spaces, either on a dedicated or even a rotating basis, thus limiting the continuous movement of the trucks.

Council members indicated sympathy with the need for greater food choices, with Mayor-elect John McCorristin indicating that members of the governing body have been discussing the issue.

Council President Sam Wierman said one issue the council is wrestling with is how to meet the need without “stepping on” the brick-and-mortar food vendors and restaurants in the borough.

All agreed that it was a recognized problem and one for which council needed to structure a solution.

“We are actively talking about it,” Wierman said.
