Reflecting on Ninth Anniversary Of Day Terror Struck America

CREST HAVEN — The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders passed a resolution to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States.
The day will be marked at the County Administration Building, 4 Moore Road at 1 p.m. with a ceremony to observe the day and remember those who perished in that attack, including some who lived in or were related to county residents.
The following is the resolution passed Tue., Aug. 24:
WHEREAS, nine years ago, more than 3,000 innocent people lost their lives when a calm September morning was shattered by terrorists driven by hatred and destruction; and
WHEREAS, on that day – and since, we saw the greatness of America in the bravery of victims; in the heroism of first responders who laid down their lives to save others; in the compassion of people who unhesitatingly stepped forward to help those they had never met; and in the generosity of millions of Americans who enriched our country with acts of service and kindness; and
WHEREAS, today, we continue to see the greatness of America further demonstrated in the courage of our brave men and women serving in uniform and those who have lost their lives and made the ultimate sacrifice to advance freedom and prevent terrorist attacks on America; and
WHEREAS, by a joint Resolution approved December 18, 2001, the Congress has designated September 11th of each year as “Patriot Day”.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Cape May, that this Board again expresses its support of the President of the United States and all of our military personnel as we stand united in the fight against terrorism; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Board calls upon the citizens of Cape May County to commemorate “Patriot Day” with appropriate ceremonies and remembrance services and asks that they join the County in front of the County Administration Building for the annual Cape Ma¥ County Memorial Ceremony was we reflect and remember.

9/11 Ceremony
CAPE MAY — The Cape May Kiwanis Club and the City of Cape May will sponsor the annual Memorial of Remembrance on Sept. 11 a the end of the Cape May Promenade overlooking the Cape May cove and the lighthouse.
The Cape Harmonaires will provide patriotic music starting at 6:!5 and the actual ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m.
In addition, the flag will be lowered by Alex Coulter and Michael Eck who were present at the World Trade Center memorial site and will be folded by members of Boy Scout Troop 73.

9-11 Ceremony in North Wildwood
NORTH WILDWOOD – “Just as we celebrate our country’s joyful moments in history, so we must mark the tragedies that cost us so much and continue to test our mettle,” North Wildwood Mayor Bill Henfey stated.
The city’s observance of the Sept. 11 tragedies will be as follows:
At 8:50 a.m. on the steps of City Hall, 901 Atlantic Ave., Mayor will give a welcoming speech.
At 8:56 a.m., a moment of silence will be observed at the ringing of the commencement bell and the raising the 9-11 Flag of Honor to the peak of the flagpole, and then half-staff by North Wildwood Police.
Kevin Toland will play “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipe.
Rev. Wallace of Notre Dame de la Mer Parish will offer the invocation.
Mayor Henfey and council will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
Dolly McGee will sing the Star Spangled Banner.
Police Chief Robert Matteucci will introduce NWFD Deputy Chief Jeffrey Cole.
Council President Patrick Rosenello will introduce VFW Post 5941 and the Emerald Society Color Guard.
Pastor Ginnie Keiser of North Wildwood First United Methodist Church will offer a closing blessing, and Dolly McGee will sing “God Bless America.”

NORTH WILDWOOD — At St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 321 St. Demetrios St., on Sun. Sept. 12, a memorial service will be conducted immediately after the liturgy and a floral wreath will be placed in the ocean in memory of 9/11 victims.
Father Steven J. Vlahos, pastor of the church, reminds all faithful Christians to respect the Muslim faith and the Muslim people and not vilify all Muslims for the acts of a few extreme terrorists.
He, too, lived the agony of the 9/11 attack knowing and having served one of the victims, Danielle Kousoulis, who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald in the World Trade Center.
He continues to comfort her parents, family and relatives and pray for the repose of the souls of all victims in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania attacks.

NORTH WILDWOOD — Wildwood Catholic High School and Cape Trinity Catholic will be having a 9/11 ceremony on the ellipse in front of the building around 8:15 on Fri., Sept 10.

OCEAN CITY — The city’s observance of Patriot Day will begin at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, Sixth and Wesley Avenue.
Veterans groups and the city will honor the victims of the tragedy by holding the annual service.
The public is invited.

SUNSET BEACH — A Sept 11 flag ceremony will be held, weather permitting) at Sunset Beach, at the western end of Sunset Boulevard, at 6 p.m. Organizers stress this is not the Sunset Pavilion in Cape May.

Wildwood Crest to host 9/11 Memorial Service
WILDWOOD CREST — The Borough of Wildwood Crest will host a Sept. 11 memorial service Sat., Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Miami Road and New Jersey Avenue, adjacent to Sunset Lake.
Various community and religious leaders are expected to attend the Patriot’s Day ceremony, which will honor all who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
In addition, volunteers are needed for placement of American flags throughout the borough in preparation for Patriot’s Day. Those interested should contact Joyce Gould at 522-0198.
