Redevelopment Info Session Set

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – In January, the Cape May Planning Board bowed to public outrage when it voted not to support a controversial redevelopment proposal.
Public claims of secret plans with a local developer, along with what city officials said was a 1970s image of urban redevelopment, killed the proposal.
Now the city has returned to the redevelopment concept with a focus on the area surrounding the former Beach Theater, an area of the city that Mayor Clarence Lear says has “lost its luster.”
To that end, the city has hired James Maley an experience land-use lawyer who is also advising Middle Township. Maley will make a presentation on the redevelopment process in the state at an upcoming town hall meeting.
City officials have asked residents to ignore rumors, turn the page to blank sheet and use the Maley presentation as a starting point for discussion.
