STONE HARBOR MANOR – Lyn Crumbock invites all Cape May County residents to make recycling an art form.
In fact, she hopes that some of that artful recycling is entered in the Third Annual Countywide Creative Recycling Contest. Entries are limited only by one’s imagination, but cannot exceed two square feet in size. Theme is “The Cape May County Experience.”
At the Nov. 15 contest kickoff in the Marshview Hall at the Wetlands Institute, Crumbock and members of the county’s Creative Recycling Contact Committee, who will judge contest entries, was surrounded by recycling examples from the two prior years.
Kathy Nichols, Margaret Mace School art teacher, displayed what unique, useful items can be crafted using tightly folded magazines. One of the items was a cup-shape container suitable for holding pens and pencils. She also showed a bowl that was also made from other folded magazines.
AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador Zach Nickerson inspected a lava lamp from a previous contest in the “Gadget” category. That lava lamp was made by Mrs. Bowman’s first grade class from Upper Township, in a recycled clear plastic bottle filled with water and colored oil, similar to a wave machine.
Another of Nichols’ creations was an old hard-back book artfully cut with a shape of a male reading a book, similar to a diorama.
Another recycling idea from 2011 was entered in the Art Category, submitted by John Mazurie of Ocean View. He created the mosaic art design using old tiles and broken dishes. The piece depicted the sea with sailboats riding on waves.
Along the floor were entries done by Sea Isle City school students last year that used cast off boxes, Styrofoam beads and more to make artistic creations.
Sponsors of the contest are the county Municipal Utilities Authority and the Creative Recycling Contest Committee. Its goal is to promote recycling and reuse by displaying the creative and extraordinary talents of county residents.
There are no age restrictions, although entries will be placed in one of four age categories: eight and under, 9-12 years, 13-17 years and adults.
All entries must be delivered to the Lockwood 4-H Center, 355 Court House-South Dennis Road, Court House on March 20 or March 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. each day.
An entry form must accompany all. Judges will decide on first through third place in each category.
Winning entries will be displayed at a place to be announced from April 8 to April 17. Ballets will be available for voting on the “People’s Choice Award..”
An artists’ “meet and greet” will be held April 10 for those who wish to discuss their creation with attendees.
Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the Earth Day Fair on April 20 at Cape May County Park and zoo.
Committee members include: Alma George, Joe Alvarez, Victoria Sterling-Scales, Crumbock and Nichols.
