Recreation Center Due for Improvements

By Don Tozer

DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township will be taking bids from interested contractors to perform various improvements to the recreation complex. The improvements include resurfacing of outdoor basketball courts, replacing gutters and downspouts, furnishing and installation of sod and sprinkler systems around the basketball courts, and replacing entry and exterior doors to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. All improvements are posted in the same advertisement, but bids will be accepted for the individual projects.
Deputy Mayor Brian O’Connor says that the repairs are badly needed as he believes the courts have not been resurfaced in over 15 years. “The courts have begun to collect water in areas, which makes it hard to host games after a heavy rain. When it comes to the safety of our kids, we have to be ahead of this stuff.”
Sealed bids will be opened and read March 27 at 2 p.m., at Township Hall. Specifications and plans may be obtained from the Township Clerk for a fee of $25. Award of contracts, if any, will be made to the lowest and best responsible bidder at a formal committee meeting.
Township Engineer, Jack Gibson will hold a pre-bid conference on March 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the recreation complex located at 565 Dennisville Road. Gibson will be available to show the site and answer questions from prospective bidders. All prospective bidders are encouraged to attend.
O’Connor hopes to have at least the basketball court improvements done in time for the start of the season. Summer basketball usually begins mid-June.
“Our rec center is our crown jewel, we need to invest to keep it one of the best recreation complexes in the county,” O’Connor said. He added that committee member Frank Germanio is currently looking into grants to help offset the costs of the ADA compliance projects.
