Ready for 5G?

By Vince Conti

AVALON – Almost a year ago, Verizon Wireless approached Avalon with a request to install a series of small area nodes across the borough. The argument was that the nodes would boost capacity in the most heavily trafficked areas of the cellular network, also offloading pressure on the main network in preparation for new technologies like fifth-generation cellular wireless (5G).
The request to place nodes on 38 poles across the resort raised more questions than it answered. Borough approval was not given.
Verizon is back asking to place antennas on the borough-owned radio tower on the municipal lot adjacent to Borough Hall. Verizon says this is a temporary measure. The carrier anticipates more upgrades to its network to accommodate the new technology.
5G is more of a reality than it was a year ago with next generation networks rolling out in selected locations.
Council’s discussion Feb. 13 makes it likely that the borough will initiate a bid process for commercial antennas on its tower, expecting Verizon to be one of the bidders.
