COURT HOUSE – A Feb. 4 Middle Township Committee resolution awarding a bid for when-needed assistance in snow removal caused one resident to ask for clarification on how the decisions are made regarding snow removal, especially on streets that are not major thoroughfares.
Mayor Timothy Donohue explained that a variety of factors enter into any calculation of whether or not to expend taxpayer funds on private contractors to supplement the resources of Public Works. Priorities may involve major streets that are township rather than county responsibilities, ensuring that emergency responders could get equipment out to respond to calls, and areas where treacherous conditions may pose an enhanced danger due to ice or drifts.
Donohue admitted that there are always going to be lower priority streets. He said that the township tries to hold to a need to make all areas in the township accessible within 48 hours of a snowfall. Decisions on how to meet that goal and when to use private contractor assistance rest with the superintendent of Public Works.
