Public Safety Building Preliminary Funds OK’d

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – The Cape May City Council unanimously adopted a bond ordinance March 20 that provides the initial funding for a Public Safety Building on the site of the existing firehouse on Franklin Street.
The ordinance appropriates $300,000 for preliminary expenses that will include a survey, architectural options, and engineering review.
Aware that the complex for police and fire departments will be expensive, Fire Chief Alexander Coulter and Police Chief Anthony Marino held an open house the week before the vote. They provided tours of the facilities to make clear the current deficiencies.
Public comment showed strong support for the project. The expectation is that the architectural options forthcoming will help place a firmer dollar figure on what the joint public safety complex will cost.
