Primary Election June 5 Selects Who’ll Run in November

By Al Campbell

COURT HOUSE — Democrat and Republican voters throughout the county are reminded of the Tue., June 5 primary election.
Who could blame prospective Republican voters if they wonder what good it would do to vote? That’s because other states have already held their primary elections, and Mitt Romney, with a reported 1,144 delegates in his corner, is the presumptive Republican presidential candidate. Of course there is still a convention to attend that will make that selection official.
Regardless, polls will open at 6 a.m. and remain open until 8 p.m. for Democrats and Republicans to select their choices for candidates to run in the November general election.
Undeclared voters who wish to cast a ballot in the primary election may do so, and in so doing will become either Democrat or Republican. Voting machines in this election allow the person to vote for only one party’s candidates. Undeclared voters who wish to remain so cannot cast a ballot on June 5, but must wait for the November election.
Regarding the Republican primary, 50 delegates will be sent to the national convention from the Garden State. All of those delegates are to be awarded by the “winner-take-all” vote from throughout the state. State GOP rules mandate the delegates to vote for the primary’s winner on the first three convention ballots.
For president Republicans will select one between Mitt Romney “Cape May County Regular Republican Organization,” Newt Gingrich, “Republican,” Ron Paul, “Republican,” and Rick Santorum, “Republican.”
