Primary Election Decided by Under 12% of Registered Voters

By Al Campbell

COURT HOUSE – Of 67,503 registered voters in Cape May County, just fewer than 12 percent cast ballots in the June 4 primary election. That translated into 8,107 ballots, down 765 from the 2012 primary when interest was likely sparked due to the presidential race.
This county has registered 26,760 Republicans, 13,520 Democrats and 27,223 classed as “other.” The latter majority could have voted, but that would have aligned them with either Republicans or Democrats, something many of them shun, clinging to their independence, although they are classified as “unaffiliated.”
The numbers and bar graphs, showing percent of votes on the County Clerk’s new election website, www.capemaycountyvotes.com, clearly indicated the sweep Gov. Chris Christie had over his lone opponent, Seth Grossman. The governor received 5,476 votes compared to Grossman’s 589.
The same held true in the GOP State Senate contest in which Susan Adelizzi Schmidt garnered 4,590 votes to Robert G. Campbell’s 635.
In the GOP General Assembly race, Sam Fiocchi received 5,010 and running mate Kristine Gabor chalked up 4,797.
Incumbent Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes received 5,160 and 4,723 votes, respectively.
For the GOP State Committeeman, Tomaso Rotondi received 4,968 votes. GOP State Committeewoman Lynda Pagliughi got 5,117.
In municipal races, Republican selectees in Dennis Township were Eugene L. Glembocki, and Jennifer Hand, with 215 and 208 votes respectively.
In Middle Township, Republican Melanie Collins received 670 votes.
In North Wildwood’s mayor race (incumbent Bill Henfey is not seeking reelection), Patrick Rosenello got 408 votes. For that city’s Council at Large seat Edwin W. Koehler received 391 votes. For the 1st Ward, Margaret Bishop got 227 while in 2nd Ward, Salvatore Zampirri received 160 votes.
Stone Harbor Borough Council Republican incumbents Barry D. Mastrangelo and Albert J. Carusi received 121 and 100 votes, respectively.
In Upper Township GOP Township Committeeman John C. “Jay” Newman got 673 votes and Curtis T. Corson Jr., 637.
In Woodbine, GOP Borough Councilman Eduardo Ortiz received 65 votes.
On the Democrat ballot, Barbara Buono received 1,255 votes to Troy Webster’s 285.
State Sen. Jeff Van Drew received 1,694 votes. Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Bob Andrzejczak received 1,591 and 1,434 respectively.
Democrats fielded no freeholder candidates.
In municipal contests, Democrats in Dennis Township included Committeeman John Murphy and Brian O’Connor, who got 90 and 92 votes.
In Middle Township, Democrat Michael J. Clark received 328 votes to Salvatore DeSimone’s 140, thus Clark will carry the party banner in November for a seat on the three-member governing body that has two Republicans in control.
Democrats fielded no candidates for North Wildwood’s council races, or in Stone Harbor’s council race, not in Upper Township’s committee race.
In Woodbine, Democrat Julia Hankerson received 18 votes.
These above figures are unofficial until certified by Cape May County Clerk Rita Fulginiti.
