Pollinator Habitat Clears Hurdle

By Vince Conti

AVALON – The ongoing development of a pollinator habitat at the northwest corner of Armacost Park ran into a temporary snag recently when bids for plant materials for the most recent additions came in higher than expected.
The design of the environment was done by the Taylor Design Group with the involvement of environmental consultant, Dr. Lenora Tedesco, of the Wetlands Institute, along with the municipality’s Environmental Commission.
Meeting the standards set for the quality levels for plant materials limited the market that the materials could be drawn from and an initial bid was $50,000 for the materials and a maintenance contract with a landscape firm. The rebid brought the costs down nearly in half and the project is moving ahead.
The borough elected a one-year maintenance contract with a goal to determine if the work could be assumed by the Department of Public Works by 2020.
