Police Unity Tour Chapter II Thanks Avalon for Support

By Press Release

AVALON — Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi and the Avalon Borough Council received recognition for its continued support of the Police Unity Tour, Chapter II which serves Cape May County. Dennis Felsing Jr. from Sea Isle City presented Mayor Pagliughi with a plaque thanking the Borough for its continued support of the annual event during the July 9 meeting of the Avalon Borough Council.
“We accept this award in behalf of the brave men and women in our public safety community who continue to volunteer for the Police Unity Tour while also serving and protecting our local municipalities,” Mayor Pagliughi said. “The Borough of Avalon is proud to support the Police Unity Tour each year that honors police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.”
In May, 1997 the Police Unity Tour was organized by Officer Patrick P. Montoure of the Florham Park Police Department with the hope of bringing public awareness of police officers who died in the line of duty. The Police Unity Tour began with 18 riders on bicycles who conducted a four-day fundraising bicycle ride from Florham Park, NJ to the National Law Enforcement Police Officers Memorial in Washington DC. The effort raised $18,000. In 2013, Chapter II represented 200 of the 1,500 members who made the trek to Washington, DC and the collective effort raised $1.72 million. Each year, Avalon provides personnel and transportation to assist in the effort of the Police Unity Tour.
Another important presentation was made during the meeting. The Avalon Volunteer Fire Department made a presentation to Avalon Police Sgt. Sean McNair for his efforts in investigating a small fire at the Concord Café on Dec. 22, 2013. While on routine patrol, Sgt. McNair investigated an unusual odor and tracked the source to an unreported fire inside a storage room. McNair sounded an alarm and reported the fire immediately that potentially saved lives and substantial property damage.
