Police Shortage Cited

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – Cape May City Police Chief Anthony Marino told City Council March 5, that the department is understaffed, losing trained officers to what he termed “department hopping.”
Budgeted for 22 full-time officers, Marino said the department is down to 18, meaning his ability to run four squads of four officers is constrained. The department provides police services to West Cape May and Cape May Point, as well as the city.
Citing a trend in which officers are hired and trained in Cape May only to opt for jobs in other departments after only a couple of years, Marino did not offer a reason why the city was not retaining officers.
Noting that the department handled almost 16,000 calls in 2018, Marino said he was “as shorthanded as could be.” He said the department was looking at opportunities to get new officers in ways that shorten the lag time between hiring a new officer and having that officer trained and available for deployment.
