Police Chief Opts for Retirement in West Wildwood

By Lauren Suit

WEST WILDWOOD — Police Chief Alan Fox’s retirement agreement is scheduled for commissioner review at the borough’s next regular meeting on Feb. 6.
If accepted, his retirement would be in effect that same day.
Mayor Herbert C. Frederick said because the borough’s Chief of Police has been on medical leave since last July. The reason for the medical leave was undisclosed and Frederick said he couldn’t comment any further due to matters of personnel.
During Fox’s medical absence the Frederick had said the borough needed someone in the interim to oversee the day-to-day operations of the department and created the position of the director of public safety.
However when the new director of public safety, Anthony P. Renzi Sr., started work in October, his job was met with a petition with 75 signatures of those opposed to position. Rather than spend money on a public referendum, Borough Commissioners opted to rescind an ordinance that created the position of the director of public safety the corresponding salary.
According to the Police Department, the chief had 25 vacation days, 50 sick days, 15 holi-day days and 17 personal days accumulated as of Oct. 24. The chief’s salary is $54,223.
