CREST HAVEN – Cape May County freeholders passed resolutions congratulating outstanding seniors, May 23. Also, an organization was lauded for its humanitarian contributions to the community.
The presentations took place at the annual Senior Jamboree at Avalon Community Center May 18.
Bob Swanson and Frances Guinan were this year’s Outstanding Seniors of the Year.
Christ Gospel Church “Love Center” in Whitesboro was honored as the Outstanding Organization of the Year. The honors were bestowed by the county Department of Aging and Disability Services.
The board also recognized the 41st season and reopening of The Mad Batter and Carroll Villa Hotel in Cape May.
Paving Bids
A $401,995 contract was awarded to Ricky Slade Construction, Inc. of Bridgeton to repave various county parking lots. They include lots at the Animal Shelter, Prosecutor’s Office, and Crest Haven fuel pumps, as well as three areas in the County Park and Zoo, and a section behind the main library in Court House.
South State Inc. of Bridgeton was awarded a $2.1-million contract for maintenance paving of a number of county roads.
Gibson Associates was awarded a $112,789 contract to provide construction engineering services for 2017 maintenance paving of those various county roads.
Three bids were received for the maintenance paving contract.
Airport Site Remediation
A $790,000 contract was awarded to Tetra Tech Inc. for engineering services and site remediation at the Cape May County Airport. County Engineer Dale Foster told the board remediation work is done there annually.
“It’s difficult to know how much is needed. We get test results and determine what is the next step to remediate areas of concern,” Foster said. He added there had been a change in project managers, with the latest being “very efficient, he gets back to us right away.”
The Site Remediation Reform Act set the stage for mandatory completion of the remedial investigation of the entire airport, once operated by the Navy.
That was to be done “on or before May 7, 2016, for all discharges that occurred on or before May 7, 1999, which is the case…” the resolution noted.
The firm Mott MacDonald was awarded a $7,500 contract to provide license site remediation services at the former Everlon Building at the airport. The building is to be demolished.
The resolution noted that during the contract’s work, it was found necessary to increase the original scope of the work to prepare a Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation Fund application with the state Department of Environmental Protection.
