AVALON – The July 11 Avalon Borough Council meeting witnessed continued objection to the borough’s recently completed sand back-passing project. Homeowners from the borrow area near 34th Street beach continued to advocate for a long-term strategy that does not depend upon taking sand exclusively from their beachfront when north-end beaches need replenishment.
Efforts by the borough this year to prevent problems that occurred in a 2016 back-passing effort were successful and acknowledged by the speakers. Three property owners used public comment to urge the governing body to use areas other than the borrow area from 34th to 40th streets.
The borough, constrained by environmental regulations, Department of Environmental Protection and federal permit processes, and often by urgent need caused by late spring storms, has responded by stating a willingness to use beach areas further south when the complicating factors of regulations and timing permit such use.
