CAPE MAY – Operation Fireside warmed the hearts of nearly 340 Coast Guard recruits from Training Center Cape May on Christmas Day. They were the guests of 120 Cape May County families for a day of home-cooked meals, telephone and television time, and an opportunity to relax from training’s rigors for a short time.
According to a release, the events, which takes place at Thanksgiving and Christmas, are coordinated by the American Red Cross in conjunction with the Training Center. Volunteer host families are sought earlier in the year by the agency, which then helps to link the recruits with those families.
Some of the families have, in previous stories, told how they formed long-lasting friendships with the recruits they hosted. They reported that some have remained in contact for many years after the recruits graduated and went to duty stations in far-flung parts of the globe, to places where the Coast Guard serves.
Those volunteer families help to reinforce the link that the county has established with the sea service. It is what helps to maintain Cape May County as a Coast Guard Community.
