Officers Start Law Enforcement Careers

By Al Campbell

CREST HAVEN – Forty five members of the 68th class of Special Law Enforcement Officers I received certificates of completion from Cape May County Police Academy May 15.
Completion of the two-week course was timed to coincide with departmental seasonal needs of barrier island departments in Cape May and Atlantic counties.
For many officers, this is the first step in a law enforcement career.
Staff instructor Rocco DiSilvestro presented each officer with their certificate, but in brief remarks, he reminded them that the most important thing they could do was to return home safely at the end of every shift.
Sen. Jeff Van Drew and Assemblyman Robert Andrzejczak (both D-1st) attended and voiced concern for the new officers.
The academy’s Special Officer Class I is certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. The 80-hour course provides training in PR-24, handcuffing, defensive tactics, disorderly person’s offenses, first aid, use of force, various patrol concepts, and ethics.
Upon graduation, the student will be a certified Class One Special Law Enforcement Officer. As such, they will not carry a weapon and are chiefly tasked with enforcement of municipal ordinances.
