CREST HAVEN — The pending retirement of Stephen O’Connor, 53, Cape May
County administrator was made public Mon., April 3. He will also step down
as executive director of the Cape May County Bridge Commission, where he
started his career as a toll collector.
It is likely he will retire in June, ending over three decades in county
government, the last dozen years in his present post.
He will take the post of interim executive director of the South Jersey
Economic Development District, a post held by Gordon Dahl, who lost the
position April 3 after a reported vote of no confidence from a panel of 14
board members of the multi-county agency that channels federal funding to
counties.
The district has faced serious financial concerns in recent months, and
members voted a loss of confidence in Dahl.
O’Connor, a Sea Isle City resident, was given a six-month interim contract
by South Jersey Economic Development District at a salary of $9,500 monthly.
It is expected he will produce results in half that time, according to
published reports.
Freeholders on March 27 reconfirmed the appointment of Elizabeth Bozzelli as
acting deputy clerk of the board and as acting deputy county administrator
to sign documents necessary for operation of government.
Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton said there was no person immediately in
line to assume O’Connor’s full-time post in the county, for which he was
paid $133,045 annually.
“He is good with public policy. In the last five or six months, he had been
very good,” said Thornton.
