OCEAN CITY – At the Dec. 28 City Council meeting, Mayor Jay Gillian announced that the tax office would be open Dec. 30 to accommodate a last-minute rush to pay 2017 taxes this year, to take the deduction ahead of changes to the federal tax code.
Sweeping changes to the tax code were approved in a party-line vote by the Republican-led Congress and signed by President Donald Trump.
Along with numerous other changes, the new law is expected to reduce the amount of available deductions for property tax payments in 2018.
City finance director Frank Donato said his office would be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 30 at City Hall to accommodate the rush. Taxes can also be paid through the weekend at www.ocnj.us/Tax.
“Normally, what is a very quiet week in the tax office has been very busy with people paying 2018 taxes in 2017,” he said.
Councilwoman Karen Bergman asked for more detail.
“There’s a cap going into 2018 on the amount of exemptions you can claim between state and local taxes. I’m not looking to give advice on how people should file their taxes or what they should do. Contact your CPA or your tax accountant for that,” he said.
This week, Gov. Chris Christie signed a late-term executive order mandating municipalities accept and credit 2018 tax payments before the end of the year.
