OCEAN CITY — The Ocean City Police Department recently purchased six new Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for officers to carry in their patrol vehicles. The six new units increase the number of AED units to a total of eight for the department. These units have been deployed in the two supervisor’s vehicles and in each of the five patrol sector vehicles, on a twenty-four hours basis. The remaining AED s located at Police Headquarters. All police officers are trained in the operation of the AED units and receive biannual recertification at the Cape May County Police Academy’s In-Service program.
The purchase and deployment of these AED units is in response to the information gathered from the community at the recent Public Safety workshops held in Dec. of last year. The deployment of the AED units in these patrol vehicles and supervisor vehicles allows the units to be mobile, throughout the city, and available for immediate deployment for cardiac-related emergencies.
Chief Callahan state, “Given the strategic location of out three fire houses, coupled with our quick response times, from both Police and Fire, Ocean City First Responders are better equipped and well trained to provide immediate care to a resident and/or visitor. Bottom line, if one of my family members were to have a cardiac-related emergency, I would certainly hope they were here in Ocean City – we have the gold standard in responding to medical emergencies.”
