Ocean City Police Department to Continue its Proactive Enforcement of DWI Laws

By Press Release

With the increase in visitors and residents coming to Ocean City for the summer of 2010, the Ocean City Police Department has taken an aggressive approach at enforcing drunk driving and impaired driving laws.
Over a five day period starting on June 13,and concluding on June 17, 10 persons were taken into custody and charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
Since January the police department has charged 37 persons with driving while intoxicated, 13 of those have been charged in the first two weeks of June. During the same time period of January – June 2009, 33 persons were charged with driving while intoxicated but only five were charged from June 1 to June 17 2009.
A breakdown of those persons charged indicates that seven were under the age of 21. Three were involved with motor vehicle accidents. These numbers indicate an alarming number of underage persons are not only consuming alcoholic beverages but have decided to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence. We believe that these underage drivers are here to celebrate their recent high school graduations and college classes ending.
The Ocean City Police Department will continue its proactive enforcement of the drinking and driving laws along with the underage drinking laws. During the peak summer month’s eight officers are assigned to the Alcohol and Noise Unit. This unit concentrates its enforcement efforts on crimes involving alcohol consumption. In addition the police department deploys extra officers on the street during peak hours that specifically target the drinking and driving laws in the State of New Jersey.
