OCEAN CITY – In a brief meeting held May 5, Ocean City Council unanimously approved extending the grace period for second-quarter property taxes.
Several towns approved similar resolutions, but at an early meeting, city attorney Dorothy McCrosson said municipalities did not have the authority to waive the interest on late payments. The city instead reduced the interest rate on property owners owing more than $1,500.
After Gov. Phil Murphy signed an executive order allowing local governments to enact a grace period, citing the economic impact of the pandemic, Ocean City Council held a special meeting with that resolution as the lone item on the agenda. The meeting was held remotely.
Under the resolution, there will be no interest charged on property tax payments due May 1 until June 1. Normally, Ocean City charges 8% on late payments under $1,500, 18% for taxes over that amount.
