COURT HOUSE – Federal immigration authorities are reviewing a request by the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office to enter the 287(g) program that delegates enforcing immigration law to local departments, The Press of Atlantic City reports.
The program would allow the sheriff’s office to send officers to a four-week Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) training program. Upon completion of training, those officers would be able to investigate arrest and detain undocumented immigrants they encounter on the job.
County Counsel Jim Arsenault told The Press of Atlantic City that, to his knowledge, federal officials in Washington, D.C., are still reviewing the request to join the program, and that Sheriff Gary Schaffer may bring a resolution to freeholders if immigration officials approve the request.
Opponents of the request are expected to voice their concerns at the Board of Chosen Freeholders meeting scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the administration building at 4 Moore Road Feb. 28, the report continued.
