NORTH WILDWOOD – North Wildwood City Council passed a resolution to change the name of the Eighth Street Field to “Bill Henfey Park,” in honor of the former mayor Aug. 5. The name change was revealed in a heart-warming announcement during the National Night Out event in North Wildwood, surprising Henfey and most of the attendees.
The announcement included a display of the planned improvements.
Henfey, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but moved to North WIldwood at the age of 22. He became a citizen of the community through his dedication to public safety as a police officer and his service of allegiance as mayor from 2006 – 2013.
In 2013, Mayor Henfey and council began acquiring information on how they might be able to attain Eighth Street Field as a city asset, in order to preserve the land from any sort of development.
Purchase of the field was finalized Dec. 20, 2013 – just before the end of Henfey’s term. It is anticipated that county Open Space preservation funds will reimburse the city for the cost of the acquisition.
