NORTH WILDWOOD — Got spare change? Better hold on to it if you’re planning on parking in North Wildwood this summer.
The city is considering an increase of 25 cents to the $1 per hour that is currently being charged to park here.
The increased meter fee is one of many options City Council is considering as it develops its 2009 budget, because those quarters add up. The additional 25 cents could result in an additional $200,000 in parking meter revenue. The city collected $459,046 in parking revenue last year.
The additional parking meter revenue would come not only as a result of the rate in-crease, but also from the addition of about 80 parking spaces along Surf Avenue and an extension of the city’s parking meter season, which now runs from May 15 to Oct. 25.
According to Mayor Bill Henfey the ordinance would be introduced to set the maximum parking rate at $2 per hour, giving future councils an easy way to change the rates, but for 2009 the rate would reach $1.25.
Henfey also said the extra charge is reasonable, considering the free beach and the city’s other free amenities.
In neighboring Wildwood, the parking meter rate is $1 per hour, but the rate was not en-forced for 2008. In Wildwood Crest, the rate is also $1 per hour.
With the budget expected to be introduced to the public in April with a possible tax rate increase of less than 2 cents, City Council President Patrick Rosenello said the city was examining every single user fee and non-property tax income source.
