CREST HAVEN – Deluxe Italian Bakery Inc. of Runnemede was awarded a contract, worth about $30,000, to supply bread and related baked goods to the Crest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for a year beginning Aug. 29, with a one-year option.
The Aug. 8 action by freeholders came with a question from Director Gerald Thornton to Purchasing Agent Kevin Lare.
“Where are they located?” he asked first.
Lare told him Runnemede and added that the county had been purchasing bread products from the firm, but that this was the first time bidding.
“They were the only bidder,” said Lare.
“It seemed strange we would not have a local bakery, even Formica or somebody local,” said Thornton.
“We encouraged them to bid, as we do with all firms. We’ve been buying ancillary products from them and told them a couple of months ago that the bidding was coming down,” Lare added.
“I can’t believe there is not a bakery in this county not interested,” said Thornton.
“The last firm we had was out of New York City,” said Lare.
