A longstanding dispute between the state aeromedical service and the private companies seeking to compete with it was resolved today, according to a report by the Star Ledger.
The new protocols, which took effect immediately, will dispatch whichever helicopter is closest to the patient, regardless of whether the aircraft is operated by the state or a private company.
Prior to today if a MedEvac were requested by an EMS provider in county the state police helicopter South Star would be sent from Voorhees, NJ when AtlaniCare’s MedEvac based in Hammonton is closer by about 15 nautical miles when calculated to the Woodbine airport.
An exception will occur if the difference in distance between a state and private helicopter is less than five nautical miles. When responding to a 911 call, the state gets priority. When handling transportation between hospitals, private companies get the first call.
