Nesting Ends at Point

STONE HARBOR – Dr. Lenore Tedesco, executive director of The Wetlands Institute, told Stone Harbor Borough Council Sept. 18 that heavy rains and high tides associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon “effectively ended the nesting season at the Point.”
Tedesco said the Point had seen a “very successful nesting season.” The Point is one of the few areas where the black skimmer, an endangered state bird, is breeding successfully. It has been so successful that the borough recently extended the ban on vehicles at the Point beaches from Labor Day to Oct. 1 to give late hatchlings time to develop their ability for flight.
The high water event means that nesting is over for this season, the Point can be opened to permitted vehicles as early as Sept. 22, Tedesco said.
