TRENTON – Gov. Phil Murphy vetoed a bill that would have allowed “distressed small business tenants” to suspend rent payments for up to three months. The missed payments would have had to be repaid over a six to nine-month period after the state of emergency ends.
Murphy expressed concern about the impact of the emergency suspension bill on non-residential landlords, also in distress due to the coronavirus crisis. The bill, in all cases, shifts the burden from tenets to property owners, Murphy said, adding that some form of rental assistance would be a better approach.
Murphy says he is seeking “evenhanded steps to lift the tide for everyone concerned.”
