CREST HAVEN — Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) announced at its meeting Sept. 16 that it will hold a dedication ceremony for the Wastewater Reuse Project at the Crest Haven Complex Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. with the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
The re-use project is to divert some of the wastewater being discharged into the ocean for irrigation purposes at various facilities, including the County Park/Zoo, Goshen Road Sport Complex, Veterans Cemetery and Cape May County Technical High School.
Chairman George Betts said the water is potable, although it will not be used for drinking. Pipes in the reuse program are purple, he said.
Betts said it was the first project to be completed out of a slew included in a state water supply bond voters approved in the 1980s.
In 2006, the MUA was awarded a grant from NJ Department of Environmental Protection for the wastewater re-use project.
The county was responsible for the installation of pipes under the Garden State Parkway and elsewhere needed for the re-use project and the MUA has addressed the treatment of the wastewater.
