MUA Employees Get Raises After Utility Fee Hike

By Leslie Truluck

SWAINTON –– After hearings on the first utility fee hikes in 14 years, the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) Dec. 3 authorized a general salary increase of 4 percent to all non-bargaining unit employees, who are not covered by the union, effective Jan. 1, 2009. (See related story on MUA fee increases.)
Executive Director Charles Norkis said all union employees will receive an increase of 4.25 percent, which was agreed upon as part of a five-year contract, which expires at the end of 2009.
The non-bargaining unit employees work in office, clerical and supervising positions.
MUA employees’ salaries are determined on a scale from one to 21; therefore an average annual salary would be about grade 11, which makes $49,644 and will receive about a $2,000 annual raise with the 4 percent increase.
Norkis said the raises were given based on the CPI, consumer price index, which he said is at about 3.9 percent.
