More New Jerseyans Are E-Filing Their Tax Returns This Year

By Press Release

TRENTON – More New Jerseyans than ever are discovering the convenience of electronic filing during the 2014 tax season.
The State received 1.4 million electronic filings as of March 3, up about 7 percent, compared with 1.3 million during the same period a year ago. The number of paper filings was down by 13,390 returns.
The Department of the Treasury is encouraging taxpayers to file electronically so their returns are processed more quickly and accurately. Throughout the filing season, State Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff has urged New Jersey taxpayers to go green and E-File their returns.
“E-Filing helps to reduce potential errors and can accelerate the process because we are able to read the returns much more clearly than a paper form,” the Treasurer said. “It should come as no surprise that hand-written forms can be subject to interpretation because handwriting varies. Even printed returns may contain scanning or coding errors. Electronic filing reduces the chance for errors so our staff can process returns and send refund checks as quickly as possible.”
Returns that are prepared using tax software typically are less likely to have errors because of built-in safeguards, said Taxation Director Michael Bryan. “Once you E-File, you will never go back to paper forms again because it is so much easier, more reliable and faster,” Bryan said.
The process begins when electronically prepared returns are sent to the IRS. After that federal agency accepts the Federal return, it transmits the state return to the appropriate state tax agency. Both the IRS and the state send acknowledgments that indicate that the return was received and whether or not it was accepted.
The Division does not assume any responsibility for the accuracy of commercial income tax filing products or programs. However, a list of vendors approved for E-Filing by the State Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services can be found here: http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/revenue/ApprovedE-FileVendors.shtml
