COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee has been molding an ordinance dealing with excessive use of municipal services. An ordinance was introduced Feb. 21.
The ordinance addresses properties “where nuisances exist and other activities occur which have resulted in excessive consumption of municipal services.” While the ordinance is not solely focused on 15 motels and hotels, discussion of the ordinance, while in preparation, made clear that select motels and hotels were the major culprits in excessive services use, particularly police and emergency medical services.
The ordinance sets a threshold for qualified calls for service in a period, defines what types of calls qualify as counting toward that threshold, and sets penalties for owners that continue to exceed expected service levels.
Officials were clear that they were not trying to discourage legitimate calls. They were trying to incentivize owners to set policies and procedures that reduce nuisance calls.
A March 19 hearing is scheduled.
