COURT HOUSE – At its Feb. 21 work session, Middle Township Committee heard from Construction Official Salvador DeSimone on the progress of efforts to enforce municipal codes on abandoned properties, eventually, seize those where owners are unresponsive, and demolish eyesore and unsafe structures.
DeSimone indicated he had completed the seizure and demolition of a few properties, a process he saw as accelerating as he moves forward. “I wanted to take the time to make sure I had a process in place that does this right,” he said.
Business Administrator Elizabeth Terenik said that the township has had to prioritize over 100 abandoned properties, emphasizing locations where the land, after demolition, would likely net the most return on sale. It costs about a $1,000 to complete a foreclosure, she said.
An ordinance to give “more leverage” in the process was introduced. Its hearing is March 19.
